Normally, a movie with two hours and a half running time is longer enough for theater goers, however, this seems not true to many DC fans who just returned from a nearby theater where the long-awaited superhero epic Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took the big screen. Directed by Zack Snyder, and produced by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premiered at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City on March 19, 2016 and hit the theaters both in the United States and mainland China on the same day on March 25, 2016, in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D, and 4DX, and as of May 26, it grossed $871.1 million box office worldwide, a figure which didn’t quite reach the expectations.
Compared to the $1.108 billion (figure as of May 30) totalized by Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, which was released on May 6, 2016, it looks like to catch up with Marvel on the big screen, DC Comics still has a very long way to go. Even compared to its pre-sequel Man of Steel three years ago, which took $668 million at the box office, Batman v Superman is far from being a blockbuster. What possibly went wrong with this highly expected superhero movie? Are the Batman and Superman already out of date, compared to the Iron Man, Captain America and other Marvel heroes in the Avengers team?
Maybe that’s not the deal, according to some audiences back from theaters, it seems like the storyline of the movie is not well told, especially the first 90 minutes. Some fans just joked that the first 90 minutes of the movie almost put them into sleep, because it took so much time to show how Batman and Superman each developed the animosity against the other, and when finally the hatred reached to the climax, the so-called super battle between the two super heroes just went on less than 20 minutes. And what seemed more ridiculous to fans was the reason why Batman held up the Kryptonite spear at the point of terminating Superman was merely because Superman’s adoptive mom coincidentally shares the same name with his own mom Martha. Apart from these obvious details, there are still some other questionings, e.g., Superman was framed by Lex Luthor which is more than obvious, why a superhero like Batman with incredible wisdom failed to do some digging?
Luckily, DC fans who are not satisfied with the theatrical release of this superhero epic have another choice, there is a director’s cut coming on the way, not in theaters, but on Blu-rays and DVDs instead. In this director’s cut, the movie will be extended by 30 minutes, which is a surprise to fans who can’t help but thinking, what’s could possibly been added into the extra 30 minutes? Earlier messages from Snyder revealed that the extended edition will bring back Jena Malone’s mysterious character, as well as more of Jimmy Olsen, and also a longer version of the film’s ending, which are trimmed out due to the MPAA rating of the theatrical version. If these details are brought back in the director’s cut, the MPAA rating would no longer be PG-13 but R. “There’s a little bit of action, there’s a little bit of violence that we trimmed out for the MPAA Rating that we put back. The Batman warehouse rescue, there’s a couple shots of Doomsday that were too intense. Then there’s a little bit longer ending, sort of the ending sequence, and the opening of the movie, the North Africa sequence is really much different”, says the director Snyder.
Earlier news from Forbes showed that this extended edition of Zack Snyder’s superhero epic will arrive on July 16th, providing the perfect primer for Warner Bros.’ next DC Expanded Universe film Suicide Squad, which opens in theaters on August 5th. However, soon after the gossip travels in the streets, Warner Bros. denied and corrected the inaccurate information on the release date without offering a new one, and then Amazon also removed the pre-order page on hearing the official clarification. So DC fans will have to wait a little bit longer before being able to re-watch the director’s edition, which hopefully can erase many fans’ concerns about DC’s future superhero movies, starting with the Justice League Part 1 and Wonder Woman both in 2017, and followed by the Flash in 2018, and Justice League Part 2 in 2019.
