“The Impossible”, based on a true story of a Spanish physician Maria and her family on their Christmas vacation in Thailand of 2004 enduring the horrendous Tsunami, is going to be released on Blu-ray on April 23, 2013. And the heroine of the original story Maria, who inspired this film, was integrally involved in the shoot and allegedly chose Naomi Watts to play her. Read on for more.

We meet this family on their flight into Thailand for their planned idyllic Christmas vacation. Maria (Naomi Watts) is a physician who is now a stay at home mom taking care of three boys, Lucas (Tom Holland), a sullen adolescent, and two much younger kids, Tomas (Samuel Joslin) and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast). Maria’s husband is worrywart Henry (Ewan McGregor) who fusses about trivial matters that always turn out to be pointless.

The family enjoys a splendid Christmas Eve and a fun Christmas Day. The day after Christmas, when they gather around their resort’s pool to relax, they are suddenly struck by merciless waves of Tsunami. The next thing you can see is that Maria and Lucas are trying to reach each other in the water while Maria is horribly wounded, twice speared in the leg by an errant branch underneath the water. But they end up in each other’s arms and manage to get to a marsh area which is not totally covered by water. Soon they hear a small child crying in the distance. Despite the serious wounds, Maria insists they find the child. After saving the child, the three of them get themselves up to the branches of a tree which still remains upright in the torrent. Ultimately, they are saved by local Thais, and are taken to an overcrowded and understaffed hospital where Maria gets her leg taken care of. Not long after that, Maria disappears to look for her other two children and her husband Henry, left Lucas stay in the hospital. In the meantime, Henry and the two boys have survived. After sending the two little boys unaccompanied to a higher ground in the mountains, Henry continues to search for his wife and eldest son.

Besides love and courage showed by the family in the calamity, audience can also feel warmth from strangers, the reaching out hands providing help. This is a moving film in which we can feel how fragile life is, and how we mush cherish those we love.

“The Impossible” features lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mixes in both English and Spanish, and AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.35:1. If you want to grab a copy to enjoy the great audiovisual effect and the adventurous vacation at home, just have fun, and don’t forget that DVDFab can help out with copy or ripping issues once you need a hand.
